Tertiary Amputation in a Case of Gunshot Wound of the Forearm; Recovery

F. S-, aged 21 years, a German contractor, was admitted into the Medical College Hospital, under Dr. Fayrer's care, on the 25th February, 1866, at 4g a.m., with a gunshot wound of the right forearm, produced by the explosion of a loaded firearm, whilst he was imprudently taking out the ramrod by force. The gun was held between the knees of his comrade, whilst he stood in front. The thumb and forefinger of the right hand were severed, with their metacarpal bones, and the soft parts wpre so much lacerated as to necessitate immediate amputation of the fore-arm at its lower third. Some of the phalanges of four lingers of the left hand were also blown off.
